The Salvation Army Risca Band are delighted to host Simply Brass - a day under the leadership of Derick Kane.

Whether you are a Friend, Adherent or Soldier of The Salvation Army, OR if you play a brass instrument in any other band this day is for you! - for the minimal fee of £5 per head.

During the day Derick will be leading through massed band rehearsals, rehearsal techniques, brass playing techniques, buffet lunch and some fabulous music.

The name of Derick Kane is synonymous with the euphonium as he is a world renowned instrumentalist and, even after 30 years as Principal Euphonium of the International Staff Band, is still widely regarded as one of the best in the world. Derick currently works in the Music Ministries Unit at The Salvation Army Territorial Headquarters and is closely involved in training and development, including being the Deputy Bandmaster of the ISB. The Hoover Bolton Band appoint Dave Ashworth as MD
(Date submitted: 16 September July 2007)
The Hoover Bolton Band are pleased to announce that David W Ashworth has been appointed Musical Director.

It is some time since Dave resigned from the BMP Europe Goodshaw Band, where he was Musical Director for almost 4 years. However, after several weeks rest, he was approached by the Hoover Bolton Band and without hesitation, decided that it was time to make a return to banding.

    Respected

It is understood that the band had been severely let down by another conductor and at very short notice, Dave gladly stood in to fulfil the rehearsals and concerts in the interim period. However after a very short time, it was obvious that Dave and the band worked very well together and an immediate approach was made, which he gladly accepted.

David Sharples, the bands Secretary said, "We are very lucky to secure the services of Dave. He is a highly respected conductor with an excellent track record and a fine reputation. I am sure that the band will move forward from now on.

A statement from Dave says: "I am very pleased to have been approached by the committee and accept the position of Musical Director with the Hoover Bolton Band with pleasure. The band has, for several years, had a very fine reputation. I have worked as guest conductor with them on several occasions and I am fully aware that the bandsmen are all very hard working. I can see a very bright future and look forward to the forthcoming contesting season."

The band wishes to thank Jon for all the work he has done both as MD and behind the scenes to help promote the band.

After a successful tour of California last autumn, the British Airways Band has had a busy year so far supporting local community events, such as the Ealing pensioner's concert, Laleham and Shepperton fairs, and the British Airports Authority Rotary Family Fun Day at Heathrow. During this summer, the band can be seen at the 151 Royal Logistic Corps Open Day, a Thames Valley Hospice fundraiser held at Windsor race course, The Mansion House London, the Metropolitan Police College Hendon and at the Windsor Half Marathon.

We are based at The Concorde Centre, Cranford, and rehearse on Wednesday evenings through out the year. The Band can be contacted for bookings and by prospective players through our website http://www.britishairwaysband.com

Major Reeves joined the Army at sixteen as a Junior Musician in the Royal Artillery. He became Principal Trombone of the RA (mounted) Band and Principal 'cellist before being selected to attend the Bandmaster course at the Royal Military School of Music Kneller Hall in 1974. On graduating in 1977 he was appointed at the BM of the Royal Scots. In 1983 he was appointed Director of Music (North) controlling the bands of the Scottish and King's Divisions before taking up the position in 1985 as the Senior DoM BAOR, controlling over 25 bands. On the move again, in 1987 Major Reeves returned to the Royal Artillery band in Dortmund. During this period he produced the music and displays for the Commonwealth Games opening and closing ceremonies in 1986 as well as many other major events. In 1989 he moved back to England to take over the reins of the Life Guards Band, one of the most prestigious units in the army, where he had to learn to ride at the age of 46 and took part in many State Occasions. On completion of almost 38 years service Major Reeves became a civil servant at HQ RMSM Kneller Hall in charge of the career development for over 1200 musicians in the Corps of Army Music. Major Reeves has retired from Kneller Hall but is still very active having been MD for Alder Valley, Atlas Copco, and Bedford Town Band and is currently the MD for British Airways Band.

    New Brass Bands History Book
    (Date submitted: 4 June 2007)
A new book by a Colchester bandsman is bound to bring back memories for our many members all over the country who love their brass bands.

Written by lifetime bandsman and local historian David Cawdell and entitled "Grandad played the Cornet" the book traces the history of brass bands, bandstands, band uniforms and band contesting with stories about the thirty or so bands that once played at village fetes and Harvest Festivals around Colchester. There is a very interesting chapter on dating old band photographs. The self-published book has over 100 photographs of bands and bandsmen. It is available price £6.95 plus £1 postage and packing direct from David at d.cawdell@btinternet.com

The phenomenon of the British brass band is the largest example of amateur mass-music making the world has ever seen. In the 1880's there were 40,000 bands in the UK. Every village and hamlet had one, towns had several, cities had dozens. Now there are only about 3,000. Read why they flourished and then disappeared.

David Cawdell has spent over 60 years in the brass band world both as a player and conductor. He was trained in the Salvation Army and later served for several years in the Band of the Irish Guards, taking part in ceremonial duties such as Trooping the Colour and the Festival of Remembrance as well as overseas concert tours to Canada, America and Australia. Now he divides his time between local history research, giving talks to groups on a variety of interesting subjects and conducting operatic society shows.

    800 years of Liverpool!
    (Date submitted: 20 May 2007)
Liverpool Philharmonic Hall July 10th 2007

A celebration of 800 years of our great city seen through the composing talents of Liverpudlian composer Phil Lawrence and how being born in Liverpool made him a composer! The programme boasts several premiers. The concert is to be recorded live by BBC Radio Merseyside and compared by Roger Phillips

BLAZE Trumpet Concerto (2nd UK performance), "The most difficult yet musical concerto for the trumpet I have ever heard" ITG Soloist Richard Marshall (Solo. Black Dyke Mills Band)
Poets Love of Life & Death. World Premier For Mezzo & Band. Soloist Margaret McDonald (mezzo) & The Fairey Band.
Liverpool's Heritage - 200 Choir & Band - Premier - A work that charts the very beginnings of our city from 1004 to present day
All other works in this concert are new arrangements by Phil Lawrence Inc. - Verdi, Mahler, Mendelssohn, Sinatra, Wiseman, Crocker, McCarthy, Cole Porter, Fauré & more. Massed Choirs from Liverpool Welsh Choral Union, Greenbank & Sudley Schools, Sefton Voices, LYC, members from the RLPC, Halle, Met. Cathedral Choirs.
The composer will be interviewed by Angela Heslop on BBC Radio Merseyside June 6th.

    Main Work:
    Liverpool's Heritage
    Programme notes
    Move 1.
A charter form King John in 1542 gave the port a special dispensation to take on all ships arriving to England. Thus began the special gate-way from the World. I quote all the main family names in almost a war-like chant that helped sculpt Liverpool's beginnings. The Moore's, Sefton, Derby, Stanley, Pictavensis. Saxons from 1004, Wulfric, Spott Earls of Mercia. Dark times without knowing the future? The opening is loud with shattering timpani, like birth, but also speculative as in questioning what will come, the end of the movement is very much a question mark!
    Move 2.
The age of the tall ships and the overwhelming success of Liverpool as a No1 world trading port 1640's to 1790's. So the music here is quite ship/sea like (Flying Dutchman). And then, from over that very sea came the Irish. A composed a central gigue section, with lambake and tabor drums (not entirely unlike River Dance), ends in a positive manner knowing that the future of Liverpool will indeed be long and secure!
    Move 3.
Composers do get the chance to make both social & political comment. Us composers will have a moan about society/government (like Shostakovich), but I guess I won't be sent to the Gulag for this one? (Pontins, perhaps)! I had to grow up to see in retrospect in what Liverpool's housing policy did to my family living in the Breck Rd area of Anfield in 1968/71. It indeed broke up the closeness of the extended family, not everyone had cars, and the old became trapped in a new and unfinished concrete jungle where public transport really wasn't an option. A very dark opening a sad soloist tells how families in inner-city Anfield were systematically broken up and moved on so the council could break the stranglehold that private property owners/landlords had on the city. Music then breaks into quirky play-like jazz as the kids tell how they played in their beloved street games with their extended family around them. Then councilors came to inspect their clean houses to see if they were fit to go to places like Huyton, Kirkby, Skem & Cantrill Farm with no amenities, shops, or transport. The councilors have a, Ravel La Valse Ball Room tune to lure that law abiding respectful unquestioning generation away from their life time homes, neighbors and families. The solo singer returns to tell the tale of the broken families and how still some areas were never built on to this very day!
    Move 4.
A modern day approach, a song, well, two Liverpool songs, the first in fragmented form. First we hear the first three notes from "Oh When The Saints" in a very "Walton'esque" tone, and later, all of, "You'll never walk alone" treated very differently in the band accompaniment. The song is dedicated to all those from and in Liverpool from the creative and industrial sector including thanks for my own musical upbringing, the arts, designers, sportsman & women, musical stage/theatre and screen, writers, architects, musicians, actors and comedians, modern industry, and most of all, musical education; may it never die in England's greatest creative city. Liverpool!

Missing Pieces - Brass Bands and Players together
    (Date submitted: 14 January 2007)
I have set up a mailing list to help brass players wanting to play in concerts and bands needing guest players to be able to get in touch with one another. This group has been set up primarily to help community, non-competing and lower section brass bands, initially in the area around North Derbyshire and North West England find guest players for concerts more easily. It also exists to help brass players (of all ability) to find opportunities to participate in performances more often and thereby make contact with brass bands.
I have no intention of making any names or contact details available publicly on the web. I plan to have two parts to this system, firstly the email list - requests for or from players will be sent through this list. All accepted users can receive the notifications by email - either individually or in digest format. Secondly I plan to set up a spreadsheet of available players showing contact and instrument details. This will not be public but can only be viewed by invitees, probably using google spreadsheets. If you really do not use internet and are interested in being included in the list, please ask whoever has looked at this to email me.
As this is a new idea I would very much appreciate your help, feedback and comments.

    World of Bands Radio
    (Date submitted: 16 November 2006)
The show is still a continuing success especially on the internet on www.3ser.org.au. Last Wednesday the 15th of November we celebrated our 50th 3 hour show! As you know the show goes to air "live" at 0900 (Australian Eastern Daylight Time) ( 2200 hours Tuesday night GMT ) and continues until 1200 Noon (AEDT), (0100 HOURS Wednesday morning GMT ) For the past 6 weeks or so the show has also been repeated on the Station's overnight broadcast commencing at about 5 minutes after midnight (AEDT) (1307 hours GMT ) Wednesday and is played and repeated until 0530 (AEDT), ( 1630 hours GMT ) on Wednesday. This I'm sure will be a more convenient time for listeners in the UK and Europe. We have had a many reports and comments from listeners in the US and Canada as our morning time was quite convenient for them, being heard on Tuesday afternoon and evening. Hopefully we will have more listeners in the UK and Europe now but unless sosmebody informs them of the new times they won't know. We also hope to be Archiving the program within the next 12 months, it comes down to money and for a community Radio Station this comodity is at a premium.

As mentioned in my last article, we are in need of recordings from UK and European Bands, Brass, Concert, Military Bands, Smaller and Chamber Brass Ensembles and Quintets. We have had good support from US and Canadian Bands and Quintets so therefore have been able to give them more airplay and advertise their products, Concerts and other events. Max and I have quite good libraries of British and European Bands collected over the years at our own expense but as you will realise CDs are expensive and as we are un-paid and broadcast from a non-profit Community Radio Station, we are having to repeat tracks on a pretty regular basis. I would like to take this opportunity to thank publicly, The Chicago Brass Band, The Chicago Staff Band, The Eastern Iowa Brass Band, The Brass Band of Battle Creek, Canadian Brass, The American Brass Quintet and the Tokyo Kosei Concert Band for their continuing support, plus Australian Bands, Hawthorn, Kew, The Royal Australian Navy Band, The Central Band of the Royal Australian Air Force, The Australian Army Band and the 2/10 Regiment Band of the Royal Australian Artillery (Reserve) Band. All of these ensembles have forthcoming with their CDs.

Please UK, Europe, New Zealand, Japan, become involved with our program which is as far as I am aware the longest (3 hour) Band-dedicated Radio program in the World. If there is another as long or longer please let us know. " WORLD OF BANDS" per the "net" can publicize and advertise your events and products. Have a listen on the net; you will find us niether stiff nor starchy, we have quite a lot of fun producing the show. Go to our website at www.3ser.org.au click on the "LISTEN LIVE" icon in the top right hand corner of the screen and settle back and listen to Russ Boon and Max Hunter as we present "WORLD OF BANDS". Brass Bands of The Salvation Army
    (Date submitted: 16 October 2006)
After five years of preparation, I?m delighted to confirm that the book, Brass Bands of The Salvation Army, by Ronald Holz, will be published on Saturday, October 28th at the Nationals. The book is published by Streets Publishers, Stotfold, Hitchin, Herts SG5 4AF, ISBN 0-9551988-4-7.

It runs to 488 pages and looks at Army bands from all directions - formation, history, profiles, stories, personalities and looking to the future. It covers UK, USA, Canada, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand in detail. Other countries are also included. It includes around 200 photographs, including some quite special - like the one of William Booth listening to a band of over 1,000 bandsmen playing indoors, at the 1904 Congress. Or the Australian "Lasses Band" of 1895, cleaning their instruments during a roadside break. All the Staff Bands and many Corps bands are included. The book is quite unique and the content is enlightening and honest. Lt Colonel Ray Steadman-Allen has written a Foreword that merits publication in its own right!

"BBotSA" is only available in hardback and will find its own place in Salvation Army literature. Twenty-seven years ago, I published "Brass Bands in the Twentieth Century" (Egon Publishers) by Violet and Geoffrey Brand. That was essentially for the contesting band market. Now, "Brass Bands of The Salvation Army" is aiming to provide Salvationists (and former Salvationists), with the same kind of product, covering bands from the great movement. Of course, in recent years there has been a welcome coming together of contesting and Army bands and I?m sure that band people in general will find the book of great interest.

Anyone wishing to order the book direct from the Publisher may do so by sending £25.00 + £2.95 p&p. to Streets Publishers, "Richmond", Poplar Drive, Stotfold, Hitchin, Herts SG5 4AF. Tel. 01462 730174

    (Date submitted: 7 August 2006)
The National Association of Brass Band Conductors is holding a conductor's workshop scheduled to take place on Sunday 3 September at Durham University, Palace Green, Durham. Organised by the No. 2 Area of the NABBC, proceedings will commence after the region's committee meeting at 11am with a score study of Eric Ball's Resurgam led by Ray Farr. Following a buffet lunch, at 2pm a conductor's forum will take place aiming to encourage an open discussion on the future of bands in the North East. The panel of experts leading the discussion will include Dr. Roy Newsome, Ray Farr, Linda Cook, Steve Robson and Lord Derek Foster.

Dr. Roy Newsome is the president of the NABBC and an esteemed figure in the banding movement as is Ray Farr, who as well as being a prolific conductor, composer and arranger is also head of brass studies at Durham University. Linda Cook has a wealth of experience in bands in the North East and is currently horn player with the Reg Vardy Band. Having spent many years with the band, Linda was also the first ever female player with the band.

Steve Robson is a NABBC member and currently conducts Stanhope Silver Band and champions the cause of bands in the local region and across the country working closely together for the benefit of musical projects. He works tirelessly with local ensembles and plays an important role in the groundbreaking Brass Band Aid Charity.

The final expert leading discussions at the forum is Lord Derek Foster. Former opposition Chief Whip from 1985 to 1997 and member of the shadow cabinet, Lord Foster is a former player and an enthusiastic supporter of brass bands. He has maintained his enthusiasm for brass bands through The Salvation Army and has attended Brass in Concert for the past 25 years, helping with fund- raising for much of that time. A couple are to make an emotional return to their roots in Scotland - accompanied by a brass band.
Bob and Muriel Blair met at the Salvation Army Motherwell Citadel in 1966 and married there in 1972 before moving to Dinnington, near Sheffield, in 1975. The couple have organised a tour for Killamarsh Silver Band - of which Bob is a member - to perform a series of concerts in the Motherwell area between May 27 and 29. Bob, 58, said: "I was first taught to play an instrument in the Motherwell Citadel Band of the alvation Army but have been a Bb bass player with Killamarsh Silver Band since 1992. "I have always had an ambition to take 'my band' to Motherwell so my new friends can meet my old friends.
"It will be emotional for me playing with Killamarsh and a way of saying thank you to the Salvation Army for spending time and effort teaching me to play when I was 19 years old."
The tour will see Killamarsh Silver Band perform at the Salvation Army Citadel in Camp Street, Motherwell at 7.30pm on Saturday May 27. A few tickets remain for the concert and can be obtained by ringing Captain Allan Dunlop on 01698 262809. Proceeds from the concert will go towards Salvation Army funds. Muriel, 54, said: "We have always kept in touch with our friends and family in Motherwell and visit regularly. "But this tour will be special because the citadel hall means so much to us. It has played a pivotal part in our lives. We have been there for happy occasions and sad ones but it has been a constant feature." Bob added: "I feel passionately that it important we maintain the tradition of brass bands in Britain.
"Killamarsh are a good band and I hope people in Motherwell will take this opportunity to come and hear them." The Killamarsh Silver Band will also have some guest players that Bob has played with over the years from Dronfield, Oughtibridge, Stannington, Barnsley Building Society, Old Silkstone, Maltby, Kirkintilloch Kelvin and Darley Dale brass bands. MUSE is a major success
    (Date submitted: 12 May 2006)
The inaugural MUSE Festival (Music is for Everyone) which took place in Singapore from 14-16 April was an unprecedented success with musicians travelling from around the world to take part.
Despite only four bands competing in the actual competition, hundreds of musicians took part in the fringe events, including cultural exchanges in schools and a glitzy opening ceremony which featured hip-hop dancers, exciting drum bands and character stilt walkers.
Participating musicians from Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand, Thailand, USA and the UK also attended workshops given by Chris Wormald and Tabby Clegg from the UK and the main competition, which featured each of the four competing bands presenting a 25 minute programme of music in front the of the up-beat crowd and three judges, Chris Wormald, Tabby Clegg and Professor Ho Hwee Long.
Each of the competing bands was awarded a certificate of participation and bands were awarded gold, silver and bronze certificates for their performances. The St. Franciscan Military Band from Malacca, Malaysia, was awarded a bronze award whilst Chung Cheng High School (Main) Concert Band from Singapore achieved a silver medal. The two gold awards went to James Hargest College Concert Band from Invercargill in New Zealand and the Commonwealth Secondary School Military Band from Singapore which, under Band Director Brando Tan, was also awarded the Kingsmen Challenge Trophy for the best overall MUSE Festival Concert Band.
The whole event was wrapped up with an equally glamorous closing ceremony which included a presentation of photos and reminders of the whole event projected onto a big screen prior to a departing dinner for everyone involved which gave all the musicians a chance to mingle and make friends.
Thanks to the hard work and vision of the festival organisers, MUSE has secured its place in the music calendar and announced the dates of the 2007 event which will be 6 - 8 April 2007. Already bands are expressing an interest from around the globe for the 2007 and 2008 event so if you would like to find out more log on to the MUSE Festival website at: www.orient-explorer.com/musefestiva .
British Trombone Society sets out its stall in the Brass Band Movement
    (Date submitted: 8 May 2006)
On 28 May, 2006 the British Trombone Society (BTS) will be present at the Cambridge Masters International Brass Band Championships to create more awareness about the society and its activities.
The BTS wants to encourage trombone players in the brass band movement to visit the BTS stand and meet one of its Vice Presidents, Brett Baker. Brett will be pleased to meet you and hear your views on how the society can be more proactive in the brass band movement. Ideas and suggestions can be put to Brett who will be available from 10am to 4pm near the trade stands that day.
At 4pm there will then be a brief meeting for anyone available with the aim of setting up a Brass Band Developmental Team within the BTS. One initiative Brett already has is to invite leading players in the movement to take part in a trombone ensemble that will perform alongside the Black Dyke Trombone Quartet in a recital in Birmingham's Symphony Hall at lunchtime on 22 July, as part of the International Trombone Festival. In addition Brett would like to create a trombone ensemble of brass band trombone players throughout the country that can play at future BTS events.
Anyone wanting to get involved in the Developmental Team or learn more about the BTS can visit the new BTS website at www.trombone-society.org.uk or email Brett via his website www.brettbaker.co.uk.

It's Seventh Heaven for the Arklow Shipping Silver Band
    (Date submitted: 24 April 2006)
Last Saturday (22nd April 2006) Arklow Shipping Silver Band made it seven wins in a row of National Brass Band titles when the competed in the 41st National Band Championships which this year were held in the Dominican College, Griffith Avenue in Dublin. No other Irish Brass Band has achieved a seven-in-a-row of national titles and this is probably unique in brass banding worldwide. The Band played The Land of the Long White Cloud as their Choice Piece and Snowdon Fantasy was the Test Piece.
The Adjudicator Jacob De Haan from Holland was clearly impressed by the Band's performance as he made them winners by a massive 6 points over the runners up Drogheda Brass Band. There is no time for the band to rest on it's laurels as they are back on the competition trail this weekend when the represent Ireland in the European Brass Band Championships which this year is being held in the Waterfront Concert Hall in Belfast. The Band will be performing four pieces they are The Land of the Long White Cloud, Carrickfergus (Euphonium Solo), Bohemian Rhapsody, and Little Christmas, which is a specially commissioned test piece for the European Championships. The Band would like to acknowledge the help and tutelage of Derek Broadbent during their preparations for both competitions.

Beaumaris Band will be treading on new ground in a few weeks time when they will perform a world premier in the form of an unbroken Cantata lasting just over 50 minutes in length. Musical Director Gwyn M Evans gets together with leading Welsh composer Gareth Glyn to ask him what was the inspiration behind this magnificent piece.

DIRION DIR for vocal soloists, choir and brass band by GARETH GLYN
Dirion Dir (Gentle Land) is an extended cantata (lasting an unbroken 50 minutes) for four vocal soloists, five different kinds of choirs, and brass band - it may well be the only work of its kind ever written!
It came about because of the Welsh tradition of holding "Proclamation" concerts, exactly a year before major events such as the competitive cultural festival called an Eisteddfod, and in the same part of the country. One of Wales's foremost event of this kind is the Anglesey Eisteddfod (Eisteddfod Môn), which will be celebrating its centenary in 2007. Because of this, the organizing committee decided to commission, for the 2006 Proclamation, a large-scale celebratory work from Gareth Glyn, a successful composer who has lived on the island for close on 30 years, and whose work has been performed by major orchestras all around the world, and by soloists including Charlotte Church and Bryn Terfel. The brief for the Proclamation piece was to involve as many as possible of Anglesey's many choirs (male, female, large and small mixed, children); so many responded that about 500 people will be on stage for the event. The committee's initial idea for instrumental forces was to put together an ad-hoc ensemble of individual players, but Gareth Glyn was eager to use the existing Anglesey talent of the prize-winning Beaumaris Band, and was delighted when they agreed without hesitation. The words to be set in the cantata were left to the composer to select, and he decided upon a series of poems and prose passages from various sources outlining the history of Anglesey from prehistory to the present day. It's a colourful story, taking in neolithic burial chambers and megaliths; the assault on the Druids by the Romans under Paulinus Suetonius; the ancestral home of the Tudor dynasty; the shipwreck of the Royal Charter with the loss of many lives in 1859; the Britannia Bridge fire of 1970 and so on. The literature is set for varying vocal forces, from the whole company of four soloists and ultiple choirs right down to the solo singers, so the matter of sound balance between the vocalists and band is a vital one. Gareth composed the setting with this in mind from the very start, so the solo movements pare the instrumental involvement right down to chamber forces - sometimes no more than two instruments - where appropriate; conversely, the whole might of the band is brought to bear during the climaxes for the full company, and at the times when nobody is actually singing. The band has the stage to itself, as it were, at two points in the score - firstly the overture, which is based on the theme from the final movement, and secondly an instrumental depiction of the wild Anglesey festival of olden days called Gwylmabsant: a movement which marks the central point of the whole work. Gareth's connection with the band goes back a long way - he has written and arranged several pieces for them - but he's indebted to them for the fact that he's a passable euphonium player. About 14 years ago, one of his young sons was playing baritone with the children's band; Gareth sat at the back of the bandroom throughout the rehearsals, so the conductor told him he might as well learn an instrument too! A grounding in the euph was the result, which stood him in good stead for honing his brass band compositional skills. Years before, Gareth had been commissioned by the BTM band to write an extended piece for them - he came up with Cadernid Gwynedd, a competition-type work which has since been given stunning performances by the National Youth Brass Band of Wales. It was noticed at the time that the writing for band didn't follow traditional practices - Gareth's only experience was meeting the band and asking about their instruments' characters and ranges - and this freedom from preconceptions is something he has kept for Dirion Dir. The style of the new work was something that needed a good deal of thinking about. Gareth Glyn is well-known in Wales as a composer who writes gratefully for choirs of all kinds, and many of his choral pieces are virtually standards, recorded by many choirs. He always writes to the abilities of the performers, so his works for local mixed choirs call for a technical ability different to that of, say, his setting for professional soloists. In a work such as this, the performers range from internationally-renowned singers to amateur choirs who are more used to diatonic, homophonic anthems, so they all need to be accommodated without obvious variations in style. However, over the years Gareth has developed a voice which is very much his own, but still based on diatonicism. This has enabled him to compose a work which encompasses the requirements of all the performers while at the same time producing a piece that will (he hopes) please and excite the audience.

Two workshops will also be held at The Art House at The Old Parliament and will be presented by Chris Wormald and Tabby Clegg, two of the visiting judges at the inaugural event.

Sunday 16 April is competition day; each band will perform a 25 minute programme of music which must include a set test-piece. The bands have been given a choice of three set-pieces which are all brand new works and have been composed by Darrol Barry, Richard Grantham and Pete Meechan. Easington Colliery Band announce RMT sponsorship deal

Easington Colliery Band are proud to announce their new sponsorship deal with the Rail, Maritime and Transport union on March 6th 2006. The band have worked tirelessly throughout 2005 and after extensive negotiations the band were given the great news that they had been successful in gaining sponsorship from the RMT. The band founded in 1913 was sponsored throughout the life of Easington Colliery by a donation from each mineworkers wage, and was run by a joint board of unions. After the closure of the colliery in 1993 the band, like so many others has had to support itself. The band will from now on incorporate the sponsor's name and will be known as RMT Easington Colliery Band. One of the first engagements for the band with the RMT will be the Mayday Parade in London. Other high profile events with the union are being arranged throughout 2006. For all the work with the RMT, the band has amalgamated with RMT Silksworth Band. However the bands will keep their own identities and continue to fulfil their own commitments. Bob Crow General Secretary of the RMT a union with a membership of thousands world-wide, is proud to be associated with almost a century of North East traditional brass bands.
Brass Band Week 2005 (19-28 May)
    (Date submitted: 7 March 2006)
Brass Band Week 2006Last year, a campaign was launched under the title Brass Alive in 2005. The intention was to convey to those outside the close-knit banding community the importance of brass bands in the cultural and musical heritage of the UK. It was hoped that we could make the public at large aware of the almost unbelievably high technical and artistic standards of our top bands, the fact that bands are active in hundreds of communities up and down the country with many thousands of players, the contribution bands make in the field of music education and the important role we play in the lives of their own local communities.

The idea behind the campaign was quite simple. Bands throughout the UK were asked to undertake at least one event during a designated week. The exact nature of the event, its scale and its arrangements were all a matter for each individual band. It was hoped that if enough bands took part, the resultant programme of events taking place across the country would be sufficiently large and impressive to attract the interest of elements of the national media, over and above the local impact achieved by individual events. It was also hoped that the entire brass band movement would focus upon what must be our two main aims in the years ahead - to get more people playing in and listening to brass bands.

It must be admitted that the response in 2005 was rather patchy but there were some amazing efforts from a few bands, most notably Jedforest Instrumental in the Scottish Borders and Barton Town in North Lincolnshire, who ultimately shared the prize offered by British Bandsman for the most significant contribution to the campaign. Each of these bands undertook a co-ordinated and well publicised series of events in their own respective communities combining entertainment, public awareness, information and youth development initiatives. Through a series of performances in local schools followed by an open band rehearsal, one of these bands managed to recruit a 25-strong beginner group.

Overall, the biggest response came from bands in Scotland, with over 50 events taking place and groups such as Salvation Army bands and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama brass department getting involved. The extensive programme attracted the attention of BBC Radio Scotland, resulting in extensive coverage in programmes throughout Week plus the follow up of a series of brass programmes later in the year. 2005 was, of course, the third year in which Brass Band Week had been staged in Scotland with the active support of the Scottish Brass Band Association (SBBA) and it is perhaps not surprising that there was a greater level of participation from bands there than in the rest of the UK, where it was taking place for the first time.

It is now time for Brass Band Week 2006 to be revealed and the aims and intentions of the campaign remain the same as last year. There is still an urgent need to bring our bands and music to the attention of a much wider cross-section of the public and the requirement to increase audiences and achieve an appreciation of brass bands and their role in society, art and culture remains as pressing as ever.

This is something that every band, whatever its status, size or standard, can and should be involved in. Whilst we all wish to see the famous names play their part in this initiative, mass participation is what is really required, with bands from every section, unregistered non-contesting bands, school and youth bands all having an equal part to play. Our aims will only be achieved with participation at all levels and in all parts of the country. For once, we all require to work together, as only with that strength of common purpose will our goals be achieved.

Brass Band Week 2006 will take place from 19-28 May. Like last year, the period is stretched to ten days to incorporate two full weekends. British Bandsman, Brass Band World, 4barsrest and theMouthpiece.com are all backing the campaign and will be involved in ensuring that everyone within the brass band community is fully aware of what is happening and the importance of being involved. The British Federation of Brass Bands and the SBBA will again back the promotion of the initiative.

Brass Band Aid is also to become involved in Brass Band Week. Its involvement will not only raise additional funds for that particular worthy cause, but will also allow us to draw attention to the huge amount of support given by bands to a variety of charitable and community causes.

So, what will your band be doing during Brass Band Week? Every band is requested to arrange at least one public event to take place at some point between 19 and 28 May. The event could be a concert, a performance in a public place such as a shopping centre or a park, a Songs of Praise evening in a local church, an open rehearsal, a workshop or a school visit. The event could involve just one band or could see two or more bands joining forces. Static displays or exhibitions in local libraries or even a shop window in the high street could also form part of the overall programme. The choice of event is entirely a matter for each individual band.

Once a band has decided on the details of its event, there will be a simple process to register details in what will become a comprehensive listing of all Brass Band Week events in 2006. These details will then be promoted through the various sections of the band press. Once details of, hopefully, hundreds of events have been received, appropriate information and press releases will be issued to the national media. Obviously, the greater the scale, diversity and geographical spread of the programme of events, the more likelihood there will be of attracting the attention of the media and, through them, the public at large.

Co-operation between bands can obviously increase the potential impact of events in a particular local area. An example would be a number of neighbouring bands joining forces to promote their events perhaps with a joint press release or by sharing press advertising costs.

If bands can accept the need to work together for the greater good and the benefits this could bring, our potential for achievement becomes much greater. It is hoped that county and area associations will also become involved in helping to co-ordinate the promotion of events in their own areas and, perhaps, even in arranging 'flagship' events in larger centres of population.

Please don't sit back and leave this to others. Only maximum effort and participation from all sections of our movement and from as many bands as possible will ensure that our aims are achieved for the benefit of us all.

Brass Alive Aid - Brass Band Week 2006

Bands can sign up for Brass Band Week at www.brassbandaid.com. Details required will be: date of event, venue, name of band, conductor, event title, brief details of the event including ticket prices and a picture if required. In addition to the prize being offered to the band making the most significant contribution to Brass Band Week 2006, the best contribution by a youth band will be rewarded by a day with euphonium virtuoso, Glyn Williams (courtesy of Fred Rhodes Ltd.), in which he will perform as a guest soloist at the winning band's concert anywhere in the UK.

The best contribution by an overseas band will receive a newly commissioned piece by a leading international composer, a prize provided courtesy of the Internet forum, theMouthpiece.com. 4barsrest will make its own award to the band staging the most original event presented during Brass Band Week. Every band taking part is asked to buy a set of Alan Fernie's work, African Funk - a piece playable by any band, which can be bought from Just Brass or from the Brass Band Aid website. Every penny of the £12.00 per set will go directly to Brass Band Aid. In addition, we would encourage bands to buy the BBA CD at a cost of £10.00 each (sale or return if necessary), for sale at events, as well as any other fund raising ventures that they can think of that will help this most worthy cause.

Brass Band Aid has raised a remarkable £20,000 so far. Everyone in banding will benefit if we can double that during the last week in May!

Monkey riding to £25,000 for good causes
    (Date submitted: 13 February 2006)
Kevin Wadsworth, Musical Director of the Yorkshire Co-op Band, adjudicator and former principal horn player of Black Dyke, Brighouse & Rastrick and the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain is currently preparing for a gruelling Monkey Bike run from John O'Groats to Lands End.
A group of 30 riders, two retired police officer outriders and two paramedics from Medevent Limited will spend one week in June undertaking a Monkey Bike run from John O'Groats to Lands End in a bid to raise around £25,00 for two great causes; Greenlea Oncology Unit, Ward 12, Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Cancerbacup.
The gruelling Monkey Bike run is the brainchild of Kevin Wadsworth and Stuart Hobson. Kevin has been the driving force behind the whole project having had first hand experience of the first-class care given in Greenlea Oncology Unit whilst suffering from leukaemia in 2004.
Kevin, a keen Monkey Bike rider, has gathered other Monkey Bike enthusiasts from around the country through a forum on the internet and the riders will set off from Perrys Garage in Huddersfield on Saturday 17 June, when they will be sent off by a few players from Yorkshire Co-op. The riders will travel by train from Huddersfield to Scotland for the start of the ride on Sunday 18 June, whilst all the bikes will be taken to Scotland courtesy of Perrys, one of the events main sponsors. The riders will pass through Edinburgh, Lancaster, Coventry, Weston-Super-Mare and Bodmin on the way to Lands End before travelling back to Huddersfield on 25 June.
The Monkey Bikers will be paying for their own accommodation and expenses during the trip in order to maximise the funds being raised for the two good causes. The trip has also been made possible by several sponsors including Perrys of Huddersfield, Medevent Limited, Barrus, Adverc Battery Management, Kings Lock Chandlery, Calder Valley Marine, RoyScot Larch, International Marine Coatings, Lee Sanitation, RS Motor Homes, Isuzu, Kuranda, Premier Travel Inn, Vetus, Conroy Brook (Developments) Ltd., and DC Motorcycles of Huddersfield.
Kevin has been thrilled by the response and sponsorship so far and hopes that the overall figure raised will be around £25,000. He commented: "Cancer and leukaemia are non-selective and the money from this amazing trip will go to Cancerbacup and Greenlea Oncology Unit which is a wonderful, fantastic place and not scary at all."
Anyone wishing to sponsor Kevin or perhaps organise a group of players to meet the Monkey Bikers along their journey can contact Kevin on 07836 511357 or e-mail Tabby Clegg at tabby.clegg@btopenworld.com

    PolySteel scoop top honours
    (Date submitted: 30 January 2006)
The Gloucester based PolySteel Band (formerly the Flowers Band) has scooped the most lucrative first prize in the brass band movement by winning the Butlins Mineworkers Open Brass Band National Festival and banking the staggering £6000 prize money.
The first-class outfit under its Musical Director Philip Harper put on two dazzling performances over two days to claim the top spot and kick the New Year off with the band well and truly in the spotlight. The win has consolidated the band's position as one of the world's premiere and most forward-looking brass bands and its combination of precision playing in the set work St. Magnus and adventurous and stylish programming in the Entertainment contest struck a perfect balance and oozed real class.
The win has left the band and Musical Director thrilled with Phil Harper commenting: "This breakthrough has been on the cards for many months and I'm delighted for all the players, management and supporters of the band who have worked so hard and endured many near-misses recently. The band played consistently well over the weekend and I'm particularly pleased with the result on St. Magnus which the band felt was one of the hardest pieces it had ever played. It is a huge boost of confidence as the band now knows it can overcome such challenges with distinction."
Despite reeling at its success of last week, the band is now back to work preparing for its performance at the Yeovil Entertainment Contest next weekend and its first major concert of the year in Cheltenham's Bacon Theatre on 18 February. The band is in sparkling form and the concert promises to be an exciting evening of first-class entertainment.
PolySteel Band is further enhancing its ranks with the appointment of one of Australia's youngest and hottest tenor horn playing talents, Alexandra Bowman. Alexandra is 18 years old and has left her home in Adelaide, Australia, to spend a year in England prior to returning in 2007 to study at Queensland University.
    Cockermouth Mechanics Band History
    (Date submitted: 27 January 2006)
Cockermouth Mechanics Band, A History has just been published by Bookcase in Carlisle. Written by Geoff Hunter, MD of Cockermouth Mechanics Band, the book consists of 104 pages of well researched information about the band and its history since its formation in 1825. The only surviving brass band from among 19 that used to flourish in the valleys surrounding Cockermouth, its history is closely linked with that of the town itself and encompasses a few detective stories along the way, not least of which is "what were the Mechanics?"

An interview with Geoff appeared in the Carlisle News & Star recently [click here]

    Bilton Fun Day!
    (Date submitted: 19 January 2006)
Bilton Silver Training Band invites young brass players of Rugby and surrounding areas to hit some "High Notes" with us at our FUN DAY on Saturday 11th February, 2006. Bilton's Training Band is taking steps to reach out into the community to increase awareness and to offer opportunities to local children (and adults) in playing a brass instrument. The 'fun day' is open to existing players AND those who would like to give it a go! Percussionists are also welcome (of course!)
The event will be a day of workshops and activities, culminating in a massed performance at the end of the session with members of the Bilton Silver Band. The sound will be incredible!
Children will be given the opportunity to be coached by experienced, local musicians, and the whole ethos of the day will be geared to a practical, 'hands on' approach. We hope to help young brass players build upon established musical skills and to further develop their learning, promoting a life-long enjoyment of music - some of our players have been members for over 50 years!
The fun day will be held at the Indian Club, Edward Street, Rugby, CV21 2EZ starting at 10.15am and finishing with a GRAND CONCERT from 3.30 to 4pm. Lunch is provided, and the day is FREE!
Please be assured that this is not an exercise in tempting your young members away from your bandroom. On the contrary, we see this event as an opportunity to forge links with our fellow musicians in the surrounding area and, with this reassurance, we hope that you will feel confident in encouraging your members to have fun with us.
We would be delighted if you could publicise this event to your youngsters. Application forms are available to download from our website www.biltonsilverband.co.uk. You can also email us at mail@biltonsilverband.co.uk.
Look forward to seeing you and yours on the 11th!
    The Programme Goes ON
    (Date submitted: 19 January 2006)
Putting a weekly programme to Air from Radio 2NUR-FM at the University Of Newcastle Australia for the past 25 years has been something the Presenter of "Brass Encounters" Geoff McGregor has been accustomed to, but certainly not under the present circumstances he is working with. Geoff unfortunately had an accident early January and although sustaining a broken wrist in 2 places as well as a broken thumb he is still aiming to attend to his duties at the Station although be it rather more slowly then usual.

Geoff is shouldering on despite plaster and all and hasn't missed a recording session. Mad well maybe but as Geoff says the programme goes on and he doesn't want to disappoint the many listeners from all over the world that tune in to hear this popular programme.
