Trumpet

Originally from a brass band background, Kitt began playing the Cornet around ten years ago progressing to assistant principal cornet of the Championship section band, Matthews Norfolk Brass. He has had many solo contest successes, most notably winning the EABBA 'Under 16, Brass Championship of East Anglia for three years running as well as the senior title (+16) for two successive years. Kitt was privileged enough for three years to have been a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain performing with them at many prestigious venues including the gala concert at the 2000 European brass band championships at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, and most notably, in two BBC Promenade concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, which were televised and broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

In November 2000 , Kitt was chosen to represented Norfolk at the Millennium Festival of Performing Arts, held in Leeds between Nov. 1ST - 5TH and performed a short trumpet recital at The West Yorkshire Playhouse, as part of the this was a unique event. Also in 2000, he was awarded a grant by the Musicas Fund. Part of this grant enabled Kitt to have a consultation with trumpet virtuoso John Wallace at the Royal Academy of Music.

In 2001 Kitt Garner won a full scholarship to study at the world famous Chethams School of Music in Manchester. At Chethams, he studied trumpet with John Dickinson, formally principal trumpet of the Halle Orchestra. Chethams gave Kitt many opportunities to play in groups including brass band (principal cornet), wind band and 10 piece brass ensemble. He was also a member of the Chethams Senior Big Band (directed by Goff Richards) who came second in the nation-wide BBC Radio 2 Big Band of the year competition in 2001. Kitt was a member of the Chethams Symphony Orchestra performing with them all over the UK, including performing Mahler's 6th Symphony with Mark Elder in summer 2003. Whilst at Chethams, Kitt took part in many masterclasses with some very distinguished brass players, a few of these included, John Miller, Murray Greig, Rhys Owens, Richard Bissell, Ian Bousfield, Dennis Wick, Kim Dunnick and Gareth Small.

In March 2002, Kitt was successful in the Chethams concerto auditions and performed Araturians Trumpet Concerto with the Chethams Senior Wind Band in The Whitley Hall in February 2003. He also performed this work on another occasion in 2003, with the arranger of the work, Dennis Wick conducting. .

In summer of 2002, Kitt Garner took part in the ITG Under 18 international solo trumpet competition and was delighted to be awarded second in such a prestigious competition, which was a tremendous honour.

Kitt is currently studying Trumpet at The Royal Northern College of Music with Murray Grieg and John Dickinson, after auditioning for places at four of the major UK music colleges where he obtained full scholarship offers at all four. These were; The Royal Academy of Music, The Royal College of Music, The Royal Northern College of Music and The Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

At the RNCM, Kitt is a member of the RNCM Brass Band, the Symphonic Wind Band, a 10-piece brass group and the RNCM Brass Ensemble. He has also started a brass quintet with five friends "Alpha". Kitt has already been selected member of the college Symphony Orchestra, which is very pleasing in his first term at the RNCM.

At the end of his first year at the RNCM, aged 19; Kitt was also chosen to represent the RNCM at Klassikfestival Ruhr European trumpet competition held in Marl, Germany in summer 2004. The major European conservatoires were each invited to send one candidate under the age of 25 to perform in this competition. Kitt was also the only UK representative.

Kitt has twice appeared on BBC Radio Norfolk, Firstly on the 23rd July 2003 where he was a guest of Louise Priest on her 'morning mix' show regarding his achievements so far then later in Summer 2004 he was interviewed on the stations 'drive live' show by Nicky Price about representing the RNCM in Germany at the Ruhr European trumpet competition.

Kitt hopes to become a professional trumpet player combining mainly orchestral playing with some solo performing.
